Saturday April 26, 2014 – Three teams from UBC and six teams from SFU gathered this weekend to participate in the sixth annual judged Wideman Education Foundation Competition. (WEF). The winning team from UBC entitled “SHIFT” introduced their project as follows:
“Recognizing that the 2014 Winter Olympics focus on able bodied athletes overshadowed the achievements of Paralympic athletes, the SHIFT team decided to raise awareness of the skill, determination and athleticism of para-athletes by allowing able bodied high-school students to personally experience para-sports. Organizing an interactive session at which high-school students could meet some of Canada’s most accomplished para-athletes and personally try wheelchair basketball, the team helped bridge the gap between the para-athletics community and the broader public. Bringing para-sports to more than 160 high-school students the team helped participants build a personal connection to para-athletics and built support for the 2014 Canadian Para Athletics team. At the end of their project the SHIFT team had successfully shifted the perspective of the participating high school students and built an appreciation of the achievements involved. Go team Canada!”
The WEF Competition Prize consists of cash, being named WEF’s Project of the Year and acknowledgement by the West Coast BC Chapter of the Project Management Institute.
The Wideman Education Foundation looks forward to organizing the Wideman Prize Competition again in 2015!
